A Prayer When Starting Something New

Humans find comfort in the familiar. It can be easier when one knows what to expect. And trying something new expands our horizons. It can be good to step outside where we are most comfortable.

Today, I am having lunch at the site where I will be doing my practicum and internship as I finish up my master’s degree in mental health counseling. This is just a lunch and calm time to get to know each other. No actual counseling involved.

I woke up this morning excited and a little nervous. I know it will be fine. I know God will be with me. And it is new. New means unknown. So I wrote myself a prayer for today. Hope it helps you on a new-to-you experience.

God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. While so much in life is uncertain, it is a comfort to rest in your constancy. Today, I am doing something new. I am feeling all the feelings. And I know, you are with me. Remind me to be myself. Remind me that you and so many others love me and are cheering for me to do well.

Oh God! I know all of this and still feel the butterflies flying around inside me. I will breathe. I will slow down. I will trust. And soon what once was new, will be more familiar. For now, I trust in you to guide me through this day. Amen.
